Reconnecting with Friends

After coming back from our trip, J and I hosted a "We're Back!!" party to reconnect with our Seattle friends. Aside from the fresh Costco strawberries we strictly served drinks and snacks that we encountered during our world travel which included Coopers Pale Ale (Sydney), Estrella (Barcelona), Tsingtao Pure Draft (Beijing), San Pellegrino Limonata/Aranciata (Rome), Malbec (Buenos Aires), Dulce de Leche (Buenos Aires), assorted salami from Salumi's and marinated mozzarella (Rome).

For a little bit of entertainment, J and I decided to have a friendly photo contest during the party. He and I each picked and anonymously displayed 5 of our "best" photos and asked our friends to pick their three favorites. The winner got to decide our next vacation destination! Here were the winners in descending order:

1. Kaikoura Peninsula, New Zealand
2. Bluff Cove Lagoon, Falkland Islands
3. Buenos Aires, Argentina
4. Amsterdam, Netherlands
5. Barcelona, Spain
6. Great Barrier Reef, Australia
7. Barron Falls, Australia
8. Paris, France
9. London, UK (tie for 9th)
10. Tongaririo Crossing, New Zealand (tie for 9th)

Right now, I'm thinking the Maldives. =)

Day 221: There's no place like home!

Our initial reactions:
  • OMG! My house is so big!
  • OMG! My kitchen is so much bigger than I remembered! *does happy dance in the kitchen*
  • I want to go hug my drying machine.
  • I couldn't stop smiling while putting clean sheets on the bed in anticipation of how great I know sleeping on our own bed will feel.
  • I can shower without touching the walls!
  • Clean feet!

Day 220: The journey home begins

When we began this RTW adventure 8 months ago I couldn't believe that we were actually doing it. It felt so surreal. Likewise, I now can't believe that our journey is coming to an end. Has 8 months really passed by that quickly?

If all goes smoothly we will land in Seattle before the weekend arrives!

Day 184: The end is set

After much discussion J and I solidified the end date of our RTW trip by purchasing our tickets home. Originally, we were planning to take a real week-long vacation at the end of our trip, perhaps an all-inclusive deal by the water. Instead, we decided to save J's vacation days for right before I start my job (if and when I get one). Destination front-runners had included Santorini (Greece), Maldives and Lake Como (Italy). You might be thinking how spoiled we are for not considering any of these places tempting enough when we would already be so close geographically and will probably have no better opportunity in the future. To be honest, our decision was more based on the growing feeling of homesickness and tiredness from 7 months of travel, including the past month spent in Beijing which completely broke us. In the end we decided there's no where else we'd rather be than home!

To our surprise a one-way ticket from Rome to Seattle is twice as expensive as a round-trip fare! So, we bought the round-trip fare with the intentions of ditching the return trip to Rome. However, since the return ticket to Rome connects through Atlanta, I may just hop onto that leg to visit my good friend Jadda and then come back to Seattle on a separate one-way fare! This way I'll be able to use 75% of the ticket. =) I guess I'll have to see how my job hunting effort goes before decided on whether or not I will make this trip.

Current Location: Beijing, China

Day 117: Burglarized!

Today's joyous moments of our arrival in Cairns, Australia was overshadowed by bad news from the US - our house was burglarized! Many of our friends who live in downtown Seattle have had their homes burglarized this past year. Until today I've thought of myself as the lucky one to live in the a safe suburban neighborhood.

On the bright side when I get home I may finally be allowed to get a floppy-eared Doberman Pinscher that I've always wanted! I think he'd be sufficient to scare off anyone!

 Current Location: Cairns, Australia

Puzzlehunt! in Sydney

March 1 was a beautiful sunny summer day in Sydney. J and I could have spent the day sunbathing at one of the city beaches or picnicking on the grass in the Royal Botanical Gardens or hiking the trails at Blue Mountain but no. We chose to hole up in our cave-like apartment for 36 hours to participate in the quasi-annual Microsoft Puzzlehunt competition!  Due to the time zone differences we joined our team around 4 AM Sydney time to set up for the event and hunted with them until the conclusion at 10 AM the next day. Somewhere in between I snuck in a 3 hour power-nap.

We've been preparing for this hunt since we arrived in Sydney about a month ago. Here were some of the things we did:
  • Bought the cheapest printer we could find at Harvey Norman - an all-in-one HP printer for $49
  • Saved over 3 GBs of roll-over bandwidth from previous weeks (we have a 2 GBs per week cap) - used about 2 GBs during the hunt
  • Bought some white printer paper, mechanical pencils and a pack of tri-color BIC pens with a bonus highlighter from Woolsworth
Some things I had to talk J out of purchasing:
  • A Rubik's cube
  • Grid paper
  • Various sizes of lined paper
  • Colored highlighters
  • 2X last-minute plane tickets back to Seattle ($1200 per ticket) - I'm so not joking!
I have the best teammates! It's a real disadvantage to not be on-site for the hunt so we thank our team three times over for letting us join in from Sydney!

Australia, out!

1. Our limited array of supplies
2. J at 1 AM after solving a puzzle called "DICE"

Two degrees of separation from The Bachelor!

This is a non-travel related blog post.

I just learned today that I use to go to the same personal trainers as Jason Mesnick, the single dad looking for love on ABC's The Bachelor! I knew he was from Seattle and lived in Kirkland, but I didn't know he worked out at Elite Fitness. It's a very small gym, but I have never seen him there - probably because he goes to work out some other time of day. My guess is that he probably only recently started going to Elite to get ready for the show. I bet some of those stalker-inclined/possessive bachelorettes would be jealous to know that I likely laid on the same exercise mat that he laid on earlier in the day!

We are dorks..

In honor of Puzzlehunt 12 being announced J and I wrote this puzzle. It was inspired by our recent trip to the Louvre. We are sad that we won't be in Seattle with our team during the Hunt, but we hope to improve our 4 AM to 8 AM PST statistics from Australia. Enjoy!

Restaurant Alert! Fancy Sh-manciness in Seattle

Canlis Restaurant
2576 Aurora Ave. N.
Seattle, WA 98109

When you call Canlis to make a reservation their automated greeting sets the tone for your dinner to come - "At Canlis you can never be overdressed." I will not comment on the non-food related experience because everything is as you would expect in a restaurant of this caliber. However, I will briefly express my  amusement in their 'invisible valet' system where they just know who you are, which car is yours and when you're done with dinner so that they have your car ready for you as you exit the restaurant.

We decided to skip the pre-fix menu and order off their regular menu (Picture 1). J and I got completely different things and swapped our dishes halfway into each course to get a tasting of all the food. This behavior is probably frowned upon at Canlis, but.. oh well...

Number in () represents my ranking of the dishes with "1" being my favorite.

My Dinner Sequence
1. Mango, Prawn & Advocado Salad (6)
2. Duck Confit & Plum Salad (2) - You can't go wrong with duck cooked in duck fat. It was the first time I've had plums in my salad and it was great. I ordered this dish because I really wanted a green salad with gorgonzola. Ironically, the gorgonzola was the only part of the salad that I didn't like because I felt it overpowered the other ingredients. (Picture 2)
3. All-Natural Prime New York Steak medium (1) - Surprisingly, this was my favorite of the night. I normally don't order steak at a restaurant, because I really enjoy the $8.99/lb NY sirloin from Costco which I just slap on the grill. But, I was craving meat. So, I ordered the steak and boy, am I glad I did! I definitely can't make this at home.

J's Dinner Sequence
1. Canlis Chowder (4) - I told J that this chowder tasted like the creamy soups that they would serve in a westernized steak house in Taiwan. He thought the comment would be insulting to the chef at Canlis, but I have always liked those creamy soups. *shrug*
2. Steak Tartare (8) - This was definitely the biggest disappointment of the night for me. I thought it tasted pretty bland.
3. Muscovy Duck (5)

To Share
Truffle Fries (7) - Sadly, the truffle taste and smell eluded me. Even so, this side dish still ranked higher than that tartare which was 3 times the price.
Grand Marnier Souffle (3) - This is probably the best souffle I've ever had, which may not say much because I've only had it maybe two other times. A little too much alcohol perhaps, but it was so soft and yummy. I swear it rose almost 2 inches off the dish! If my mom is reading this post, I know she's jealous. (Picture 3)

J and I were a little apprehensive about our dinner since we usually don't.. let me re-phrase... since we never go to fancy restaurants that enforce a dress code. But, we had a great time and the food was fantastic. This was definitely a great seagway into what will hopefully be a couple of Michelin star experiences during our upcoming trip. Thank you, IL, for this wonderful gift! =)

Restaurant Alert! Small plates & wine bar in Seattle

Purple Cafe & Wine Bar
1225 4th Ave
Seattle, WA 98101

This Downtown restaurant is the newest member of the Purple Cafe & Wine Bar establishments. There are 3 in the Seattle metro region, but as far as I'm concerned, the Downtown location is the only one worth going to because the other two do offer the small plates menu. Think about it this way. J and I have become hard-core suburbanites. We hate going into the city because we can never find parking. Also, one of the (less worthy) Purples is less than 5-minute drive away from our house and offers free parking! Yet, the Downtown Purple is the only one we go to. It's just that much better!

I hate writing paragraphs, so will just summarize highlights in a bulleted list.

- simple, tasty foods made from fresh and seasonal ingredients
- stylish modern decor including a massive wine tower complete with winding staircase
- small plates menu and a separate cheese tasting menu is available in addition to the regular menu
- entrees are also very good and they're more than happy to divide one entree into two tasting plates
- if you bring in bottles of wine that is not in their arsenal, they will uncork the first one at no charge
- dessert is also tasting size, so you can order just one or a few to try (I think there's 15+ options)
- they will happily deal with any kind of crazy bill splits that you throw at them. Do you see a pattern here?
- if you go on Sunday, wines regularly sold at $50 or less are half-priced

Since their tasting menu changes seasonally, it's hard to say what are the must-haves. I would say anything with duck confit or beef carpaccio is a sure thing. From their regular entree, I have enjoyed the gorgonzola and pancetta pasta (picture) and J really liked the pasta bolognese before they took it off their menu.

Bottom line: Purple is just a fun place to go with a bunch of friends for tasty foods and friendly service at a reasonable price.

p.s. Seattle area Costcos sell Purple gift cards - two $50 gift cards for $80. You do the math.
p.p.s. Do not confuse this place with The Purple Dot Cafe which is a ghetto Chinese restaurant located in the International District. I'm not a huge fan of their food, but I hear it's really good after a night of clubbing and sufficient inebriation.
